Srinagar, Mar 14 (KNS) : The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has received approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start a super-specialty course with two seats in M.Ch Neurosurgery.
This landmark approval, confirmed on Saturday, marks the first time such a course has been introduced in the Department of Neurosurgery in any medical college across Jammu and Kashmir, significantly boosting the region's capacity to train specialists in this critical field.
This development is part of a sustained expansion of super-specialty facilities at the institution. The journey began in 2021 with the introduction of two M.Ch seats in Urology. The momentum continued with two seats in DM Neurology last year, followed by approvals for two seats each in DM Medical Gastroenterology, DM Cardiology, DM Pulmonary Medicine, and M.Ch Pediatric Surgery.
Most recently, in February 2026, the NMC also approved two additional seats in Urology. With the addition of the two M.Ch Neurosurgery seats, the total number of super-specialty seats—encompassing Doctorate of Medicine (DM) and Master of Chirurgiae (M.

The growth is not limited to post-graduate levels. At the undergraduate level, MBBS seats have been increased from 180 to 200 for the 2025-2026 academic session. Similarly, the number of postgraduate (MD/MS) seats has risen from 259 to 277 during the same period.
Furthermore, the institution has also been accredited by the National Board of Examination to offer DrNB in Thoracic Surgery and a Fellowship (FNB) in Paediatric Nephrology for the 2025-2026 session.
Other courses introduced over the last two years to bolster the healthcare workforce include Post Basic BSc Nursing (80 seats per year), MSc Nursing (25 seats per year), and a post-PG diploma course in addiction psychology with 20 seats.
This comprehensive expansion across undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty courses is expected to address the critical shortage of specialist doctors in the region and position GMC Srinagar as a premier hub for medical education in North India. (KNS)
