Gh. Hassan Mir seeks reservation of women in Assembly, Parliament

Jammu, March 10:(KNS)  Apni Party Senior Vice President Ghulam Hassan Mir demanded reservation in the Assembly and Parliament of India for women.

In a statement to "KNS", a function was organized at the Party Office in Gandhi Nagar in which over 30 women from Diagana and Gandhi Nagar joined the Apni Party in presence of senior leaders.

“In our society, men and women have equal status. A society cannot progress until men and women work shoulder to shoulder. Women have remained successful in all the fields and never remained behind in any of the fields from men,” said Ghulam Hassan Mir while welcoming the newcomers into the Party.

Mir said that the Apni Party believes that a country and Union Territory cannot progress until women also progress equally with men.

“We want economic, social and political empowerment of women. Even as the women have been empowered in Panchayat, Municipal and District Development Council (DDC), but they should be given reservation in Assembly and Parliaments,” added Mir.

Speaking on the occasion, Provincial President, Jammu, Manjit Singh, said that Apni Party believes in equal opportunity to men and women and “we work for the empowerment of women and fight for their equal rights.”

Manjit Singh said that the women have always played an important role. “We encourage participation of women in political activities and new leadership among them should come forward,” he said.

He said that the role of women against drug abuse is admirable as they have set an example for others in the society to follow. “In many places, women are on the forefront against drug abuse and with their help, many societies have saved their future i.e., youth. We also need such agitation and awareness among the women to lead from the front against the menace which has destroyed the future generation,” he added.

He said that the women in rural belts have education issues and they are not educated enough due to which they easily become victims of domestic violence.

“Women have no source of earning and therefore, their pension should be enhanced,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Provincial President, Women Wing, Jammu, Namrta Sharma hailed the Govt for schemes like interest free loans to encourage women entrepreneurship in J&K and it would attract women towards the industrial sector.

“The women are capable of working in the manufacturing and industrial sector. However, there was no specific emphasis from the Govt in the past. We are thankful to the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha for the new scheme in which the women will be provided interest free loan upto Rs 5 lakhs,” said Namrta who facilitated the joining of these women into the Apni Party.

Namrta condemned the killing of a woman and her parents by a police constable with his service rifle in Phallian Mandal. “The police department should investigate the case in-depth and punish the instigator as well as the accused person in the brutal killing of the three members of the family. We have to condemn these incidents to discourage such elements in society and also resolve issues with discussion with each other. Taking the extreme step has spoiled the lives of two families and it could have been avoided by timely intervention,” Namrta said.

Namrta said that the Apni Party will leave no stone unturned to resolve the issues of women.

Namrta said that the police stations should improve their interaction with the women to encourage domestic violence victims to approach police in case of problems at home or in the workplace.

“Police should be made women friendly and awareness programmes and interactions should be held from time to time,” Namrta added.
