GDC Baramulla Observed International Women’s Day

Baramulla March 15:(KNS)   Women’s Development Cell of Government Degree College Baramulla in collaboration with NSS units and IQAC observed an International Women’s Day. Justice Bashir Ahmad Kirmani was the guest speaker on the occasion. The program started with the recitation of the Holy Quran. Prof. (Dr.) Mushtaq Ahmed Lone, Principal of the college, formally inaugurated the program and welcomed the guest speaker and participants. He also congratulated the female faculty members on the occasion. Prof Amira Wali, Convener, Women’s Development Cell, presented a very brief account of the relevance and significance of observing International Women’s Day.

Justice Kirmani delivered the keynote address. On International Women’s Day celebration, he brought out that while discrimination against women is not inherent in or advocated by scriptural injunctions, it is tangential interpretations of religious beliefs and values, which have oriented us to accepting women as lesser mortals in comparison to men. However, occupational factors have also led to devaluation of women’s contribution to the upkeep of human civilization. The cultural factors leading to patriarchal social and political order have also undermined the significant role of women in the human history. Justice Kirmani emphasised that in order to empower women in the contemporary society, we need to recast our mind-set. We must unreservedly accept women’s existence as intrinsically and instrumentally necessary to the onward march of our society’s polity and economy. A full-fledged acceptance of women’s existence also necessitates engaging them in social, political, economic, educational and cultural decision-making. We need to utilise women’s talent optimally in the resolution of problems we are presently facing.

Prof. Shaista Qayum conducted proceedings of the session and Prof. Abdul Majeed Chalkoo offered a vote of thanks.(KNS)
