Srinagar, Sep 22 (KNS): Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday claimed to have busted a gang by arresting five persons in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district and recovered 18 stolen vehicles from their possession.

According to a statement issued to KNS, a police spokesman said that Police Station Anantnag received information through reliable sources that a number of vehicles stolen from various parts of the country are plying in Anantnag town and its outskirts which are being used for carrying out various criminal activities.

Accordingly, a case under FIR number 411/2021 under relevant sections of law was registered and investigation was initiated, the statement said.

“Subsequently, a special investigation team (SIT) under the supervision of DySP Hqrs Anantnag was constituted to investigate the matter. During the course of investigation, after strenuous efforts 18 vehicles including 03 two wheelers suspected to be stolen vehicles were recovered. Out of these, 10 vehicles have so far been established to be stolen vehicles about which FIRs are registered in various police stations of the country. Credentials are being ascertained about remaining vehicles which prima facia appear to be stolen only,” police said.

During the investigation, as of now five accused persons found involved in theft and possession of stolen vehicles have been arrested, the statement said, adding that further investigation into the matter is going on and efforts are on to recover all the other stolen vehicles mainly plying in Anantnag.

Meanwhile, police appealed people not to buy any suspicious non-J&K registered vehicle from any unauthorized dealers or persons and buy vehicles only after proper verification from the Police and concerned RTOs. (KNS)
