From 1996 to now, NC has sold J&K's power twice over: Iltija Mufti

Srinagar, April 03 (KNS): Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti on Friday attacked the National Conference (NC), accusing it of “inconsistent and duplicitous” policies on Jammu and Kashmir’s power sector, alleging that the party has repeatedly bartered away the region’s hydroelectric assets.

In a post on X, Iltija as per Kashmir News Service (KNS) alleged that NC patron and former chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, in 1996, “gifted eight power projects to NHPC at throwaway prices.” She claimed the decision forced J&K to purchase electricity from its own generation at “exorbitant prices.”

She further targeted Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, asserting that in his second term, he has again handed over two more power projects to NHPC.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel“During elections, NC promised to take back the very power projects it chose to gift NHPC. After being elected, they took a complete U-turn by handing over more projects instead of wresting back previous ones,” Mufti said.

The PDP leader further said the NC’s “duplicity” comes at a time when people in J&K are reeling under power cuts and struggling to pay high electricity bills, warning that the decision “will haunt J&K for all times to come.” (KNS)
