Srinagar, Jan 03 (KNS): Kashmir Tuesday received light to moderate rains and snowfall, ending the long dry spell of past decades.
Fresh snowfall was received in ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district and in Shopian in south Kashmir.
Rains lashed plains, giving respite from the continued old wave.
Heavy snowfall and rains ended the long dry spell in Poonch district early Tuesday.
Officials said that heavy snowfall started early morning in the higher reaches of the Pir Panjal area while heavy rains lashed the plains. Sonamarg in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district received fresh snowfall.
"Sonamarg and upper reaches of Zojila received fresh snowfall. The traffic has been suspended as a precautionary measure," said an official.
“On January 4, light to moderate rains and snowfall are again likely to occur across the Kashmir. Good news is that the prediction is for good amount of rains and snowfall across the valley,” Sonum Lotus, Director metrological department told KNS.
“On January 5, weather will remain partly cloudy with possibility of rains and snow and thunderstorm at isolated places. But again, On January 6 and January 7, widespread rains and snow would occur across the Kashmir,” he informed.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Kashmir is presently witnessing the prolong dry spell of past decades while River Jhelum, the lifeline of Kashmir, is fast drying up due to continued dry spell in the Valley, triggering concerns among people and experts.
Kashmir has for the first time in 40 years witnessed dry of spell over five to six months. As per official figures, Kashmir received only 3.6 mm rainfall in October, November and December, resulting in drying up of water bodies.
As per officials, Kashmir should have received more than 100 mm rainfall from September to December as per “normal” figures.
Meanwhile, officials said Srinagar on Tuesday recorded maximum temperature of 9.9 degree Celsius and minimum of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius while Pahalgam recorded minus 5 degrees Celsius and Kupwara minus 4.6 degree Celsius.
He informed that Jammu recorded the maximum temperature 23.2 degree Celsius and minimum of 11.3 degrees Celsius.
“Light to moderate rains and snowfall is likely to continue for next three days across the Kashmir,” said an official. (KNS)
