Srinagar, Jan 16 (KNS): Food items adulterated with Monosodium Glutamate, called in valley markets as tasting powder, flood the markets unnoticed, posing serious health hazard to consumers. The experts cautioned that due to (Monosodium Glutamate), people are suffering from severe diseases.
The usage of MSG is strictly prohibited under the law any violation of the provisions of FSS Act/Rules & Regulations is liable for penalties and may invite prosecution.
One of the gastroenterologist in SMHS hospital insisted not to be named told KNS that monosodium glutamate (MSG) a flavor enhancer that's known widely in Jammu and Kashmir as a tasting powder, actually added to majority of the foods people regularly eat, especially in the restaurants.“MSG is one of the worst food additives on the market and is used in canned soups, crackers, meats, salad dressings, frozen dinners and much more. It's found in restaurants, cafeterias and, amazingly, even in baby food and infant formula,” he said
He said while MSG's benefits to the food industry are quite clear, this food additive could be slowly and silently doing major damage to the health of people,” the experts cautioned.
He said that it appears to be no solution to this menace of food adulteration in the state. Meanwhile it is been seen that food items adulterated with non-permitted synthetic colours flood the markets unnoticed, posing serious health hazard to consumers and challenging officials to eradicate the menace.
The social outfits and the people of the state have opined that a strict penalty with a severe punishment is required to control the activities of rising food adulteration in the state.
As per the officials of the government the adulteration cases are high in twin cities of summer and winter capital of state.
As per data 83% of the milk and milk food products were found to be adulterated, the last time when the milk samples were analyzed. Milk could be found adulterated by adding water or by removing the cream or by adding artificial coloring agents like Annatto, ceramel, coal tar colors and preservatives like formaldehyde, boric & other acids etc.
A total number of 1247 adulteration cases were registered in year 2014-15 and 2015-16, by Controller Drug and Food organization. (KNS)
