Jammu, Oct 22 (KNS): A consignment of 108 Mahindra Scorpio SUVs arrived at the Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal in Samba on Thursday, marking the first transportation of Mahindra vehicles to Jammu and Kashmir by rail, railway officials said.
The vehicles were transported from Chinchwad in Maharashtra to the ACTL Samba Pvt Ltd cargo terminal, covering a distance of approximately 1,992 kilometres.
According to railway officials, the consignment was carried in 27 specially designed BCACBM automobile carrier wagons, allowing 108 vehicles to be transported in a single rake.
The arrival marks another addition to automobile freight operations in the Jammu Railway Division, which has been expanding vehicle transportation through rail routes.
Officials said a similar consignment carrying around 116 Maruti Suzuki vehicles was transported from Manesar in Haryana to the Anantnag Goods Terminal in October 2025.

Railway officials said transporting vehicles in bulk by train could reduce dependence on road transport, lower logistics costs and ease the movement of heavy vehicle carriers on national highways.
They said direct rail transportation was also expected to improve vehicle supplies to automobile dealers in Jammu and Kashmir.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu, Uchit Singhal said the arrival of the first Mahindra automobile rake at Samba was an important development in the division's freight operations.
He said the Gati Shakti infrastructure was aimed at reducing transportation costs and improving the movement of goods through environmentally sustainable means.
Singhal said direct rail connectivity for automobile consignments would help local dealers receive vehicles more efficiently and support the automobile sector in Jammu and Kashmir. (KNS)
