Srinagar, Feb 27 (KNS): Finance Commissioner J&K, AK Mehta along with Commissioner Secretary Sports J&K Sarmad Hafeez and Director General Youth Services and Sports Dr Saleem ur Rehman felicitated the Kashmir athletes who bagged medals in World Snow-Shoe championship held in Myoko-Japan recently.
The Kashmir athletes were felicitated during a function held in Gulmarg recently. In the World SnowShoe Championship held in Japan, Kashmir athletes while representing India had bagged three medals. It was first time ever that India bagged medals in World SnowShoe championship Muzamil Hussain Bagged bronze medal in senior 9-kilometre category while as Ayaan Bin Shahnaz and Zain Ali both of Burn Hall School bagged silver and bronze medals respectively in junior 5-kilometre category.
Hailing the athletes, Mehta said that it is good to see Kashmir athletes shining at World stage in which athletes from all over World had assembled.
“We know how much talent Kashmir athletes possess and once provided a platform to showcase that talent, they always shine. It is not easy to compete in athletics against the players from Countries like USA, Canada, Europe or Australia who have got running in their blood.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelI must congratulate these three players for bringing laurels for Country and J&K,” Mehta said.
Sarmad Hafeez who had flagged off team before they had left from Kashmir for the participation in the World Championship said that he is happy to see team coming back with medals.
“I am too happy to see team that I had flagged off coming back with medals. It has happened first time ever in the history of SnowShoe sport. I hope it is only beginning and in future India will dominate SnowShoe sport at World level,” he said.
DG DYSS, Dr Saleem Ur Rehman on the occasion said that SnowShoe has got huge potential in J&K and it is the activity that can be done anywhere where snow is.
“It is tough sport as it is athletics; that is running on snow. Unlike skiing and snowboarding that require slopes and prepared tracks and is mostly done in Gulmarg, SnowShoe can be done anywhere. DYSS will acquire its own SnowShoe equipment and from next season will hold coaching camps of SnowShoe in J&K,” he said. (KNS)
