Er Rashid Writes to Editors Guild, Raises Alarm Over Harassment of Journalists

Srinagar, January 27(KNS): Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) on Tuesday said that jailed Member of Parliament from Baramulla, Engineer Rashid, has written a detailed letter to the President of the Editors Guild of India, expressing deep concern over the harassment and summoning of Kashmiri journalists working with national dailies.

Quoting Engineer Rashid’s letter, AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi in a statement issued to KNS said the MP wrote, “While I have limited access to the outside world, through reports published in The Tribune, Indian Express and Hindustan Times, I was able to read your statement expressing concern about the harassment of Kashmiri journalists including Basharat Masood of Indian Express, Ashiq Hussain of HT and others who were being summoned by the Cyber Cell of J&K Police.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel”

Engineer Rashid, in his letter, flagged that the journalists were summoned over their reporting related to “profiling of mosques, mosque committees, dar-ul-ulooms and other religious institutions.”

Quoting further, Inam Un Nabi said Engineer Rashid wrote, “Undoubtedly, journalists have to be careful about reporting and need to keep in mind the security concerns. However, in J&K, especially in the Kashmir Valley, in the name of security concerns and national interest, the fourth pillar of democracy is being undermined and humiliated.” (KNS)
