Don't Act Independently, Power Vests With People's Representatives: J&K Deputy CM to DCs

Jammu, Feb 20 (KNS): Jammu and Kashmir's Deputy Chief Minister, Surinder Choudhary on Friday said that "babus" (civil servants) need to realign their thinking and accept that the elected government is now in charge.

Choudhary asserted that District Development Commissioners (DCs) do not have the authority to make independent decisions, emphasizing that power rests with the people's representatives.

"Babus should straighten their minds. I don't think the Deputy Commissioner should make decisions independently. There is an elected representative. It has been a year and a half since the people elected their government—the bureaucracy needs to understand that," Choudhary told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) outside the assembly.

'Donations for Religion Not a Crime'

The Deputy CM also addressed the issue of religious donations, stating that while corruption and anti-national funding are unacceptable, collecting funds for religious purposes is a common practice across all faiths and should not be targeted by administrative orders.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

"If money is misused for corruption or against the country, that is wrong. But if someone collects donations for a religious cause, it happens in every religion—in my religion, in yours. The DC should not decide on this; the government should," he said.

Choudhary urged the public to remain vigilant against officials who create unnecessary obstacles, comparing them to a night watchman who strikes with a stick without warning.

"The watchman comes, doesn't say anything, and hits us with a stick at night. That is why we say—be alert, be alert. We will remain alert," he added. (KNS)
