Displaced Kanyari families abandoned since 2014: Usman Majid

SRINAGAR, May 13(KNS): Former minister and ex-MLA Bandipora Usman Majid on Wednesday accused successive governments in Jammu and Kashmir of neglecting the displaced families of Kanyari village in Bandipora district, saying they have been left to suffer in “inhuman conditions” despite repeated promises of rehabilitation since 2014.

In a statement, Majid said successive political setups had only used the plight of Kanyari villagers for “statements and assurances” without taking any concrete steps for their rehabilitation.

“These families have been betrayed repeatedly. Every government promised rehabilitation and justice, but even after 12 years they continue to live in darkness, poverty and uncertainty,” he said.

Majid alleged that the affected families were living without basic amenities, including drinking water, electricity, healthcare, roads and permanent shelter facilities.

“It is unfortunate that innocent families are still forced to live in temporary sheds under harsh conditions while those in power remain silent spectators.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThis is not governance but abandonment of people,” he said.

The former minister also criticised the administration for allegedly not allowing the displaced families to construct permanent homes at their present location.

“If the government has failed to rehabilitate them elsewhere for more than a decade, then on what basis are these poor families being stopped from constructing houses for themselves and their children?” he asked.

Describing the situation as a “humanitarian failure”, Majid said the people of Kanyari were being treated like “third-class citizens” whose suffering did not matter to the rulers.

He demanded that the Jammu and Kashmir government either rehabilitate the affected families at a suitable location with all basic facilities or officially permit them to build permanent houses where they are presently residing.

Majid said history would not forgive governments that ignored the suffering of helpless citizens for over a decade.(KNS).
