Disallowing Mirwaiz from offering Friday prayers serious concern: MMU

Srinagar, Feb 10 (KNS): Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema Jammu & Kashmir has said that repeatedly disallowing Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to offer Friday prayers at Jama Masjid is a serious concern.

In a statement issued to KNS, MMU termed it as a grave violation of  religious freedom and direct interference in the religious affairs of the Muslims of Valley.

It said this is a serious concern for the religious organisation and the people of the state and the scheduled sermon of the Mirwaiz on the auspicious occasion of Meraj-ul-Nabi (SAW) in Jama Masjid was also not allowed as he was detained at his residence.

“It is beyond our comprehension as to why the government is repeatedly detaining him at his home on Fridays and important religious occasions.  Being released from detention after more than four years, he was allowed to offer Friday prayers only on three Fridays. This unjust gesture seriously hurts the sentiments of people associated with Mirwaiz,” it said.

It added that such disregard of the administration towards him is extremely regrettable and the claims of normalcy by the authorities are also completely belied by this measure.

MMU urged the government to stop its authoritarian approach and allow him to carry forward his mission of religious propagation.
