Kugam Oct 24 (KNS): Continuing it's outreach to affected apple farmers, the Director General Horticulture Kashmir Aijaz Ahmad Bhat on Sunday paid a visit to snow hit orchards of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on second consecutive day.

As per a statement, issued to Kashmir News Service (KNS), DG Horticulture conducted an extensive tour of various places of Kulgam where he visited various orchards particularly the most affected areas viz. Chawalgam, Nihama, KB Pora, Gaudwana, Manzgam, Nagam, chimmer, Khull Ahmadabad,Dano kandi Marag, Noorabad etc. 

He was accompanied SDM Noorabad and concerned Chief Horticulture officers along with field functionaries.

While talking to KNS DG Horticulture said that the orchards in Kulgam and Shopian have faced extensive damages. 

“We will ask the UT administration to declare it as natural calamity, so that the apple growers and farmers would get properly compensated. 

I extend my sympathy with the affected apple growers, and I assure them all possible assistance from the department of Horticulture,” he said. 

He expressed his sympathy with the affected orchardists and assured them of all possible help. 

He advised the farmers to continuously monitor their orchards and shake the trees regularly, so that the snow does not get accumulated on the trees.

DG also instructed the field functionaries to closely monitor the situation and be on guard in view of the incessant rain and snowfall.

He further directed the field functionaries to assess the losses and report accordingly. As per initial reports, massive damage to orchards has been reported from snowfall to affected areas today.

Notably, the Department of Horticulture Kashmir had already issued weather advisory following predictions made by the MET department. (KNS)
