DC Shopian Launches Springshed Project to Address Water Crisis, Build Climate Resilience in Zainapora

Shopian Dec 14 (KNS): In a major step to tackle water scarcity and strengthen climate resilience, District Development Commissioner Shopian, Shishir Gupta, IAS, has launched the Springshed Climate Adaptability Project in Zainapora, one of the most water-stressed blocks of the district.

Approved under NABARD’s Climate and Natural Resource Management grants, the project aims to revive natural springs, recharge groundwater, improve irrigation facilities, and promote sustainable farming practices to secure long-term livelihoods for local communities.

The three-year project will cover 11 villages spread over nearly 300 hectares and will be implemented through coordinated efforts of the Rural Development, Agriculture, Horticulture, Jal Shakti, and Irrigation departments. By combining traditional knowledge with scientific methods, the initiative seeks to ensure safe drinking water, reliable irrigation, and protection of natural springs that have supported generations in the region.

Once completed, the project is expected to benefit over 30,000 people by improving water availability and boosting agricultural and horticultural productivity.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelSpecial focus has been placed on creating water harvesting structures and upgrading irrigation systems, enabling farmers to bring more land under cultivation.

Community participation is a key component of the project. Village-level committees have been formed to oversee planning and monitoring. Recently, 29 committee members visited a developed springshed area to gain practical exposure to climate-resilient farming and sustainable water management practices.

The project also aims to address the issue of illicit crop cultivation by providing assured irrigation and promoting alternative livelihood options. By restoring water security and empowering local communities, the initiative is expected to transform Zainapora into a resilient and sustainable agricultural area.

The Springshed Climate Adaptability Project marks a significant step towards ensuring reliable water resources and improved livelihoods for thousands of residents in Shopian.
