In a major enforcement drive to regulate market rates and ensure food safety, a joint team of the Srinagar administration on Tuesday penalized multiple traders in the Bemina area and seized several domestic LPG cylinders being misused for commercial purposes.
The inspection, conducted under the directives of Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, was led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) West, Irfan Bahadur. The team comprised officials from the Revenue, Police, Food & Civil Supplies, Food Safety, Legal Metrology, and Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC).
Officials said the drive targeted fruit and vegetable vendors, bakeries, meat shops, and grocery stores to check for compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act and other statutory norms.
During the inspection, authorities booked eight cases against traders for various violations. A collective fine of Rs 5,000 was imposed on the spot.

In a significant crackdown on energy subsidy diversion, the team seized five domestic LPG cylinders found being used illegally for commercial purposes in the area.
"The team also verified the display of rate lists, compliance with FSSAI labeling norms, and storage conditions of perishable items to prevent overcharging and the sale of substandard goods," an official spokesperson said.
The administration has warned that such inspections will be intensified across the district in the coming days. Officials made it clear that non-compliant businesses will face strict penalties, including the suspension of licenses and prosecution, to ensure consumer safety and market discipline. (KNS)
