Cop killed in J-K's Udhampur firefight

Jammu, Dec 15 (KNS): A policeman was killed in an encounter between security forces and terrorists in a remote forest village of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday evening, officials said.

The gunfight broke out at Soan village in the Majalta area after security forces launched a search operation following specific information about the presence of three terrorists, suspected to be linked to the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit.

Inspector General of Police, Jammu, Bhim Sen Tuti said contact was established after police received precise intelligence inputs. A joint team of the Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Army and the CRPF was engaged in the operation, he said.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The exchange of fire took place around 6 pm and lasted for some time. One SOG personnel was injured during the encounter and later succumbed to his injuries, officials said.

They said one terrorist was also believed to have been injured in the initial firing. The operation was suspended due to darkness and difficult terrain and will resume on Tuesday morning.

Additional forces have been deployed to strengthen the cordon and block escape routes.(KNS).
