Srinagar, Apr 15 (KNS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday rededicated the renovated War Memorial at the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regimental Centre here, paying homage to the fallen soldiers of the only infantry regiment that began as a volunteer force.
The solemn ceremony was held on the 78th Raising Day of the JAK LI Regiment, which was raised in the aftermath of Partition to counter Pakistani invasion, bringing together volunteers across faiths and ethnicities united by the spirit of patriotism, officials said.
Addressing the gathering, Abdullah said the regiment embodies the resilience and patriotism of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
"This War Memorial is not merely stone and steel; it is a testament to the sacrifices made by brave soldiers of the regiment," the Chief Minister said.
The regiment is one of the most decorated infantry regiments in the Indian Army, having won one Param Vir Chakra, three Ashok Chakras, ten Maha Vir Chakras, 34 Vir Chakras, and numerous other gallantry awards, officials said.
The renovated war memorial, with names of fallen soldiers engraved on it, stands as a symbol of the regiment's resolve and its motto — 'Balidanam Vir Lakshanam' (Sacrifice is a virtue of the brave).
The ceremony was also attended by former chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, senior Army leadership including Lt Gen Manish Erry, Colonel of the JAK LI Regiment, and other dignitaries.
Wreath-laying and a guard of honour were also held at the memorial. (KNS)
