Srinagar, Feb 25 (KNS) : In a significant push towards preserving the region's architectural heritage, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of the ‘Bab-ul-Sultan-ul-Arifeen’ at Rainawari Chowk.
The project, officially titled “Construction of City Gateway with Artistic Calligraphy Landmark Gate,” is a testament to the government's commitment to enhancing the cultural and aesthetic landscape of the old city. Allotted at a cost of Rs. 116.58 Lacs, the landmark structure is slated for completion in 210 days, with a target deadline of August 2026.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of such projects in reflecting the rich syncretic culture of Kashmir. The gateway is designed as an artistic landmark, intended to restore the historical character of the Rainawari area while providing a modern urban focal point.
The event was attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq, Political Advisor Mudassar Shahmiri, and Social Media Incharge Ifra Jan, among others.

According to official details, the structure will be an architectural marvel, spanning 71 feet in width and rising to a height of 30 feet. It will feature a primary RCC frame with three large support abutments connected by a structural arch. In a blend of traditional and contemporary aesthetics, the finishing will include high-quality Maharaja brick cladding, intricate CNC-cut WPC jali screens, and custom Islamic panels. The skyline will be accentuated by two decorative wooden domes, finished with Jafri work Deodar shingles and ornamental brass finials.
Ancillary developments include paver block paving and cobble pavement in the vicinity, alongside architectural illumination with floodlights and decorative fixtures to highlight the structure’s prominence after sunset.
Executed by the PW (R&B) Division Srinagar (Core), the 'Bab-ul-Sultan-ul-Arifeen' is envisioned not just as a gateway, but as a cultural symbol that bridges the region's storied past with its developing urban future. (KNS)
