Srinagar, Feb 20 (KNS): The shopkeepers in the Government Central Market at Kashmir Haat (Numaishgah) are yet to receive the compensation for the damage that was caused by the devastating September flood in 2014.
Nisar Ahmed Kitaba, President Central Market shopkeepers told KNS that floods damaged their stock worth crores but no compensation has been paid to them thus far.
“Some of the shopkeepers couldn’t bare the loss and were compelled to close their business or work as salesmen in other shops,” Kitaba said.
Set up from during Maharajas rule, Government Central market comprises of over 130 shops dealing in handicrafts, dry fruits, jewelry.
The shopkeepers said that international as well as domestic tourists purchased the products from the market.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
“But after floods, we could not buy new products as flood left us helpless,” he said.
The market comprises of over 130 shops out of which 40 have been shifted to the new complex constructed by the government, he said.
“But most of the shops remain the same way flood left them,” the president said.
The flood level was around 15 feet which not only have damaged the products but also affected the shops, he said.
The shopkeepers hoped that the government will rehabilitate them so that they could carry on with their business. (KNS)
