CCIK Slams Power Tariff Hike, Calls It "Deep Injustice" to People of J&K

Srinagar, Aug 23 (KNS) : The Chamber of Commerce and Industries Kashmir (CCIK) has strongly opposed the recent hike in power tariffs, terming it an unjust burden on the common man and the business community. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh has approved an average tariff increase of 6.83 per cent, set to take effect from September 1, 2026, sparking widespread outrage.

In a sharp reaction, the CCIK said the decision is tone-deaf to the ground realities of the Union Territory. "At a time when unemployment is at its peak, inflation is biting the people hard, and ordinary families are struggling to make ends meet, the administration has chosen to increase power tariffs. This is deeply unfortunate," the Chamber stated.

The CCIK further questioned the rationale behind the hike, pointing out the glaring contradiction with the government's earlier promises. "From free tariff promises of relief to higher bills—what happened to the commitment?Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThis is a total injustice to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, both for domestic consumers and commercial establishments," the statement added.

The Chamber also highlighted the severe challenges facing the region's key sectors, noting that while tourism and horticulture are already grappling with difficulties, the increased tariff will further cripple these vital industries. The CCIK has issued a clarion call to the administration, appealing to the Omar Abdullah-led government to revoke the order at the earliest.

"We will strongly raise this issue and oppose the power tariff hike. We will continue to stand with the people and fight against every decision that adds to their hardships," the CCIK affirmed.

In a significant move, the Chamber has also requested the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to look into the matter, urging the central government to intervene and provide much-needed relief to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. (KNS)
