Beerwah Residents Hold Peaceful Protest Against Smart Meter Installation

Beerwah, Feb 14 (KNS) Residents of Wards 8, 9, and 10 in Beerwah town staged a peaceful protest on Saturday against the ongoing installation of smart electricity meters.

Dozens of locals, including women and elderly citizens, raised slogans demanding that the meter installation drive be halted in their wards. The protesters said they belong to economically weaker families and cannot bear the burden of inflated electricity charges.

“We are from poor families and cannot afford huge meter bills,” said one female protester. “The government should understand our situation before imposing such measures.”

Another woman, whose family member is undergoing dialysis, said, “I can barely manage my patient’s medicines.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelHow will I pay these high electricity bills? This is unjust and inhumane.”

Another local resident added, “We are currently paying a flat rate of ?1560, which is already difficult for us. Smart meters will only increase our expenses. We appeal to the authorities to look into this matter and do justice to us.”

The protesters urged the Power Development Department and district administration not to install meters in their wards and to consider their economic hardships before implementing such policies.

Later, the protest ended peacefully. (KNS)
