Srinagar, oct 16 (KNS): Jammu and Kashmir High Court Friday quashed the order of its Jammu Wing that had asked the police to impose beef ban in the state.
A full bench of the court comprising Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar, Justice Ali Mohammad Magray and Justice Tashi Rabstan while quashing the order also directed the government to reconsider the issue in context of the Constitution of India’s Articles 21, 25 and 29.
In September, a division bench of Jammu Wing of the High Court comprising Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Janak Raj Kotwal had ordered the Director General of Police (DGP) to strictly enforce a 150-year-old legal provision banning the sale of beef across the state.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
The public interest litigation was filed by advocate Parimoksh Seth, who was sacked as deputy advocate general by the PDP-BJP coalition following the controversy over the beef ban.
The issue of beef ban embroiled the state with communal tensions after a ‘beef party’ was hosted by independent legislator Engineer Rashid, and petrol-bomb attack on two Kashmiri drivers that left them critically injured.
The Kashmir wing of the High Court had given another order over the beef ban, and after which the government took the case to Supreme Court which directed the state High Court to form a full bench to decide the two conflicting orders. (KNS)
