Srinagar, Feb 06 (KNS) ; Baramulla Police on Friday strongly denied a viral social media report alleging that terrorists had fired a rocket at an army oil tanker in the district, calling the claim “completely fabricated” and designed to “spread fear and unrest”.
Police in an official statement issued to news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) said the post circulating on X (formerly Twitter) was baseless and aimed at creating unnecessary panic amid ongoing efforts to maintain peace in the district.
The actual incident, police clarified, occurred on February 05, 2026 at around 5:30 PM near Chinar Point, Pattan, when an empty oil tanker (Registration No. JK01AN-8569) caught fire due to an accidental short circuit. Police and Fire & Emergency Services personnel from Pattan responded swiftly and brought the blaze under control. No casualties or injuries were reported.
Authorities warned that spreading such false information is a punishable offence, and those found circulating lies will face strict legal action under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
The public has been urged to refrain from sharing unverified content and to rely solely on official sources for accurate updates.
Baramulla Police reiterated its commitment to combating fake news and preserving public trust in the valley the statement further reads. (KNS)
