Srinagar, Sep 29 (KNS): The district administration Srinagar on Friday imposed restrictions in various parts falling under the jurisdiction of eight Police stations to thwart a Muharram procession here.
The Shiite mourners were scheduled to carry out a Muharram procession from Guru Bazar here which would end at Dalgate area.
Authorities imposed restrictions under section 144 CrPC in Srinagar parts falling under the jurisdiction of eight Police Stations including Shaheedgunj, Karan Nagar, Maisuma, Kothibagh, Shergadhi, Kralkhud, Batmaloo and RM Bagh.
Witnesses said that Police and paramilitary troopers were deployed in large number in the restriction bound areas. The forces had erected concertina wires to thwart the vehicular and the pedestrian movement in the areas, they added.
The administration has disallowed the procession since 1990.
Later in the afternoon, police detained scores of Shiite mourners here at Batamaloo when they tried to carry out a Muharram procession towards Dalgate.
The Shiite mourners appeared outside the Fire and Emergency Service headquarters and raised slogans in favour of Islam and Karbala martyrs.
Holding banners, the Shiite mourners mostly youth wearing black dress tried to carry out a procession towards Dalgate, during which Police swung into action and detained scores among them.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Earlier on Wednesday, the Government had said that there is no ban on the Muharram processions in Kashmir.
The Divisional Commissioner, Baseer Ahmad Khan had said that it has been already made clear at various levels that all the traditional Muharram processions would be allowed as per the past practice for which requisite arrangements have already been made by the administration.
Notably, on 10th of Muharram – Youm-e-Ashoora –Imam Hussain (A.S) was martyred 1400 years ago in Karbala, Iraq.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Range, Munir Ahmad Khan told KNS that the situation remained normal throughout the day while at two or three places, the mourners tried to carry out a procession, who were detained by the Police.
“The mourners detained during the day will be released till this evening,” he said, adding that the procession being carried out at Zadibal every year was allowed peacefully. (KNS)
