Handwara, April 27 (KNS): Scores of aspiring nurses on Thursday expressed their outrage as the Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara announced 105 posts with specific criteria.

GMC Handwara has announced new criteria for staff nurse positions that requires medical subject in 10+2, while maximum aspirants have Arts as subject in class 12.

The announcement has sparked controversy, with many claiming that the criteria is biased towards candidates with a science background.

Aspirants from other backgrounds with Female Multi-purpose health worker (FMPHW) and General Nursing and Midwifery (GMN) courses have called upon the GMC Handwara to reconsider the criteria.

"I am deeply disappointed by this announcement. It's unfair to exclude candidates from other academic backgrounds. Nursing is a profession that requires compassion and dedication, not just a science stream in 12th class," said Sana, an aspiring nurse from Handwara.

Another aspirant, Tabasum, echoed similar views and said she has always dreamt of becoming a nurse, and have the required qualifications to apply for the post. "But this new criteria has shattered my dream. I hope the GMC Handwara will listen to our pleas and reconsider the criteria."

"I have completed my 10+2 in commerce stream and have also done a nursing course. I have the necessary knowledge and skills to work as a staff nurse. But the announcement of such a discriminatory criteria has shattered my dreams," said another aspirant.

The announcement has also raised questions over government's commitment to diversity and inclusivity in recruitment. Many are calling for a more equitable recruitment process that considers a candidate's aptitude and skills rather than just their academic background.

The controversy around the recruitment criteria has left many aspiring nurses uncertain about their future.

As per a BOPEE notification issued on April 26, for entry in GNM course candidates with Science or Arts in class 12th are eligible to apply. (KNS)
