Artisans' delegation meets Altaf Bukhari, seeks intervention for handicrafts revival

Srinagar, June 23 (KNS) : A delegation of Kashmiri artisans from the city’s historic downtown on Tuesday called on Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, urging him to intervene for the revival of the traditional handicrafts sector, which they said is facing a steady decline due to a host of challenges.

The delegation, led by Mir Younis Ahmad, an office bearer of the Kaarigar Kalyan Foundation, apprised Bukhari of the grim realities confronting the artisan community. While Kashmiri art and craft products command immense demand and high market value in India and abroad, the delegation lamented that the artisans themselves are left with a meagre share of the profits.

“The harsh reality is that the largest share of the profits goes to traders and big businessmen. The artisans, whose blood, sweat, and hard work keep these centuries-old crafts alive, are left with only a meagre share of the earnings,” the delegation said, adding that traditional crafts are steadily losing their appeal among the younger generation who no longer see a viable future in these occupations.

Highlighting the plight of master craftsmen, the delegation informed Bukhari that many senior artisans who dedicated their lives to preserving these skills are now compelled to take up menial jobs as their ancestral occupation no longer provides a sufficient income. “These artisans, who have been the custodians of Kashmir’s rich artistic heritage, deserve dignity and support in their later years.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThere is an urgent need for rehabilitation initiatives and necessary assistance,” they said.

The delegation further stressed the need to support young artisans who wish to carry forward this legacy. They expressed their aspiration to market and sell their products independently through markets and exhibitions but stressed the need for official support, encouragement, and guidance to turn their efforts into success.

Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari gave a patient hearing to the delegation and assured them that their concerns would be taken up with the relevant authorities at the highest level.

“There is an urgent need to protect and promote Kashmiri handicrafts, which embody Kashmir's identity, heritage, and pride,” Bukhari said. He emphasised that safeguarding the interests of artisans is essential not only for their livelihood but also for preserving invaluable traditional skills. “Collective efforts must be made to ensure that future generations inherit, cherish, and carry forward this rich cultural legacy,” he added.

Earlier, the party’s Provincial Publicity Secretary, Muzaffar Hussain Reshi, and the in-charge of Zadibal Constituency, Tehseen Dar, accompanied the delegation. (KNS)
