Anjuman Auqaf claims Mirwaiz put under house arrest ahead of Friday prayers

Srinagar, Feb 09 (KNS): Anjumam Auqaf Jama Masjid said that Mirwaz Umar Farooq has again been put under house arrest ahead of the Friday congregation in Jama Masjid.

In a statement, issued to KNS, Auqaf said that Mirwaz was to deliver a  special sermon on the occasion of Shab-e-Mehraj at Jama Masjid, as had been announced by the Auqaf.

"A large gathering of people were expected at the mosque today to participate in the blessed congregation. But early in the morning a contingent of police vehicles was stationed outside his residence and he was detained," it said.

Anjum denounced the repeated house arrest of Mirwaiz especially on Friday and not allowing him to visit Jamia Masjid to deliver the Friday sermon and participate in the mandatory prayers.

It added that since his release from house arrest in September last year, Mirwaiz has been allowed to deliver sermon on three Fridays only.(KNS)
