Amid heavy rain, snowfall prediction, fruit growers start night harvesting in Kupwara

Kupwara, Oct 21 (KNS): Many apple growers in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district have started night harvesting of apple crops in view of the heavy rainfall and snowfall prediction on 23rd and 24th of October by the India Metrological Department.

Notably, night harvesting by farmers comes a day after the horticulture department issued advisory to fruit growers and farmers in view of the heavy rainfall and snowfall prediction. The department has asked the apple and fruit growers to speed up apple harvesting.

An apple grower from Ramhall area of Handwara told Kashmir News Service (KNS) that they have started night harvesting of their apple crop in view of the early snowfall.

He said that since the horticulture department has issued weather advisory and has asked to speed up the harvesting, they have started night harvesting to avoid any loss.

“Last year due to the early snowfall their orchards suffered massive damage, so keeping that in mind, we have started night harvesting, to avoid any damage and loss,” he said. (KNS)
