Srinagar, Mar 17 (KNS): Ahead of the proposed protest rally after the mandatory Friday congregational prayers, the Hurriyat (M) chief and Jamia Masjid head cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq along with his media advisor, Shahid-ul-Islam were placed under house today.
The move was aimed to prevent them from participating in the protest rally called by the joint resistance leadership including Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani, Hurriyat (M) chief, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF chief, Muhammad Yasin Malik.
According to Hurriyat (M) leader, the leaders, Mirwaiz and Shahid were placed under detention at their respective homes ahead of the proposed protest rally after the mandatory Friday congregational prayers.
With placing him under house detention, the Mirwaiz was also barred to lead the mandatory congregational prayers at the historic Jami Masjid in the old city here.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Meanwhile, as soon as the Friday prayers ended in Jamia Masjid, the separatist leaders staged a protest rally against the killing of a minor girl in Kupwara on Wednesday.
The leaders along with scores of activists who were carrying placards assembled outside the Jamia Masjid and chanted pro-freedom and election boycott slogans.
The leaders while condemning the killing of minor Kaneeza of Hyhama village of Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the protesters called for election boycott.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted between youth and forces in Nowhatta and Humhama areas of Srinagar during which forces used tear gas shells to disperse the youth who were throwing stones on them. (KNS)
