Speakers highlight his contributions to education, transparency, and social service

Srinagar, August 6, (KNS): Ahata Waqar Chanapora, a day care and recreation centre for senior citizens, on Wednesday honoured renowned academician, writer, and social activist Dr. Farooq Ahmad Peer at a special function held at its premises.

Dr. Peer, the former Secretary of the J&K Board of School Education (BOSE), was recognised for his decades-long service in education, social welfare, and transparency in governance. His work as a member of the J&K Services Selection Board (JKSSB), where he oversaw the selection of nearly 4,000 youth in a fair and transparent manner, was widely appreciated.

The event was presided over by Dr. Farooq Ahmad Lone, former Secretary of the General Administration Department and Chairman of the J&K Public Service Commission, along with Dr. Waseem Raja (JKAS), Joint Director of Tourism, Farooq Geelani, former Chief Conservator of Forests, and Peerzada Abdaal Mehjoor, noted broadcaster, writer, and President of the J&K Mahjoor Foundation.

A large gathering of senior citizens, students, writers, poets, and cultural activists attended the event, which began with a soulful Tilawat by Haji Gh Hassan Shah and a Na’at by Javed Ahmad Baigh, creating a spiritual and reflective atmosphere.

Dr. Farooq Lone, in his presidential address, said, “The mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive — and to do so with passion and compassion.” He called for regular social discussions among youth to reflect on education, values, and service to society.

Joint Director Waseem Raja praised Dr. Peer’s dedication, saying, “Engagements with experienced academicians like Dr. Peer not only build community spirit but also raise awareness on critical issues that affect our senior citizens and society at large.”

Peerzada Abdaal Mehjoor and Farooq Geelani also stressed the importance of collaboration, social responsibility, and intergenerational learning to bring meaningful change in the community.

Chairman of Ahata Waqar, Ab Gani Paray, welcomed the guests, while former Director Doordarshan Shabir Mujahid delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was moderated by Dr. Laila Sultana, who kept the event engaging and well-organised.

Speakers also included Secretary Er. Khazir Mohammad Trag and Qazi Ab Rashid, who praised Dr. Peer’s legacy in education and social service.(KNS)
