World Soil Day is to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate the sustainable management of soil resources for food secure future

Srinagar 05-12-2020(KNS): To mark the World Soil Day, Department of Agriculture Kashmir celebrated the event by organising a workshop/seminar at Lalmandi.
Main aim of celebrating World Soil Day is to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate the sustainable management of soil resources for food secure future. The seminar was organized by Soil Survey Office Kashmir.

Deputy Director Agriculture Central Dr. Syed Waseem Ahmad Shah during the inaugural session of the workshop/seminar with the theme “Keep soil alive, protect soil bio diversity’’ said the department has taken various initiatives for preserving and analysing the soil as the soil is the symbol of fertility. It is the origin of life and basis of food production.

Project Coordinator Mushroom Farooq Ahmad Shah presented a detailed power point presentation on importance of soils with respect to physical, chemical and biological aspects of the soil. He also stressed on importance of preserving the biodiversity of the soils. PCM laid stress regarding awareness generation among the masses especially the farming community about protecting and preserving of soil flora and fauna for overall health and viability of soil for sustaining agricultural growth.

While delivering his lecture Joint Director Agriculture Inputs Amir –ud-Din Andrabi said that the department of Agriculture has been celebrating the Soil Day with great enthusiasm at Farm level and subsequently Department is celebrating the event throughout the valley. He said that the department is committed to achieve the target of 100 % of soil testing within the stipulated time.

Among others the seminar was attended by Joint Director Agriculture Extension Choudhary Mohammad Iqbal, Soil Survey Officer Kashmir H.U. Khuroo, soil specialists of the department, field functioneries and farmers of the valley(KNS).
