Aga Syed Hassan sounds alarm over Kashmir’s drug crisis

Srinagar, May 1 (KNS): Voicing deep concern over the rising menace of substance abuse in the Kashmir Valley, President of J&K Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian, Aga Syed Hassan Mosavi Al-Safavi, on Friday described drug addiction as a “silent devastation” that is systematically eroding the moral, spiritual, and social fabric of Kashmiri society.

Delivering a sermon at the historic Markazi Imambara Budgam, the prominent cleric warned that the narcotics trade is not merely a social problem but a calculated assault on the youth, consuming their faith, morality, and future. He cautioned that if not addressed with urgency, the consequences could become irreversible.

While appreciating the recent government action, including the sealing of properties belonging to drug peddlers, Aga Hassan termed these measures as positive and necessary. However, he asserted that such steps alone are insufficient to confront a crisis of this magnitude, calling for a comprehensive, sustained, and uncompromising strategy rather than temporary or symbolic interventions.

Citing the Holy Quran, he reminded the faithful of the clear prohibition against intoxicants, referencing Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:90), and stressed that substance abuse is a destructive force that must be resisted collectively.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The cleric emphasised that the responsibility to combat the menace does not rest solely with the government but extends to every segment of society. He urged authorities to dismantle drug networks from their roots, strengthen border and internal route surveillance, create meaningful employment opportunities for youth, and establish effective rehabilitation mechanisms.

Simultaneously, he called upon parents to remain vigilant about their children’s upbringing and social circles, warning that neglect at home can have devastating consequences. He also highlighted the role of teachers in going beyond academic instruction to include character building and moral guidance.

In a poignant conclusion, Aga Hassan warned that if this menace is not addressed today, future generations will not forgive the present one, appealing for a united societal response to eliminate the threat and safeguard the Valley’s future. (KNS)
