Srinagar, Mar 6 (KNS): Residents of Achan in Srinagar outskirts today held protests against the Srinagar Municipal Commissioner and demanded stopping of dumping solid waste at the site.
The agitated residents said that dumped waste is making their life miserable because of the stink emanating from the waste.
“We want the government should close it and dump the waste somewhere else,” the residents told KNS.
The residents poured on the Ali Jan road and blocked it today morning. They said that the SMC must stop dumping waste at the site.
Local Congress leader Imtiyaz Ahmad, who participated in the protests, said that the government must think of alternate measure for dumping the waste here.
“The solid waste has really become a problem for the residents here,” Imtiyaz said.

Since 19980’s when over 500 Kanals of land was bought by the SMC, the solid waste from the Srinagar city is being dumped here.
SMC says that the residential colonies did not exist in 80s when the waste was started to be dumped there.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel“Residential houses came up after the site was chosen for dumping solid waste,” SMC officials told KNS.
The site has become a regular irritant for the government as the nearby residents have been intermittently protesting against the SMC.
SMC Commissioner, Bashir Ahmad Khan told KNS the government has started a process through which the waste will be scientifically dumped at the site to generate energy from the waste.
“A waste to energy plant will be established at the site. The plant will dispose off the waste to generate power from it. The plant will be built by a contractor who has got the tenders for it,” Khan, who took over the SMC chief recently, told KNS.
He said that the setting of the plant will take some time. “But we are dumping the waste in Leachate plants which are also run scientifically,” he said, ruling out shifting the site somewhere else. (KNS)
