Srinagar, Aug 15 (KNS): Seven militants and a CRPF Commandant were Monday killed in two different encounters in Nowhatta Srinagar and Uri Baramulla.
According to reports received by KNS two militants were killed in a fiercely fought encounter between the militants and CRPF men at Nowhata in old Srinagar city on Monday and five more militants were killed in an encounter with army on the line of control (LoC) in Uri sector of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Police in a statement issued here said militants fired upon police and CRPF sleuths at Nowhatta Chowk near Jamia Masjid.
In the heavy exchange of fire the militants injured one police constable and eight CRPF men including Commanding Officer of CRPF 49 BN Promod Kumar, the statement said. All the injured were shifted to hospital for treatment where the Commanding officer succumbed to his injuries, the statement reads. Police claims to have recovered two AK rifles, eight magazines with ammunition from the encounter site. Yet in another encounter army on Monday claimed to have foiled a major cross over attempt in North Kashmir’s Uri sector by killing five militants.
A top Army official told KNS “Soldiers spotted a group of militants near Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector this morning.
Militants opened fire which was retaliated triggering a gunfight in which five militants were killed.” The official said that the identity of the slain militants is being established and searches are on.
Meanwhile a group identifying its self as “Jammu and Kashmir Islamic Front” in a statement mailed to KNS claimed the responsibility for the Khanyar attack on Monday.
The statement emailed by Spokesman Hamza Rasheed reads “Jammu & Kashmir Islamic Front claims responsibility for the attack on CRPF in Khaniyar Srinagar today”. (KNS)
