Srinagar, Nov 7 (KNS): Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in Jammu and Srinagar have together secured 30 additional postgraduate medical seats for the 2026-27 academic session, raising the combined intake of the two institutions to 549 from 519, officials said on Saturday.
While GMC Jammu has added 12 seats, taking its postgraduate intake from 242 to 254, GMC Srinagar has secured 18 additional seats, with its intake rising from 277 to 295, they said.
The expansion also brings new postgraduate specialisations to both institutions. GMC Jammu has introduced postgraduate seats in Respiratory Medicine, while GMC Srinagar has received seats in Forensic Medicine for the first time, officials said.
At GMC Jammu, the additional seats have been distributed across five disciplines. MD Pathology has seen the highest increase, from 18 to 23 seats, followed by Paediatrics, which has gone up from 18 to 20. Pharmacology seats have increased from 10 to 12, Microbiology from seven to eight, and two seats have been introduced in Respiratory Medicine.
At GMC Srinagar, the expansion covers seven disciplines.

The college has also received three postgraduate seats in Forensic Medicine for the first time. In the surgical disciplines, MS Orthopaedics seats have increased from 16 to 20, while MS ENT has gone up from six to nine.
The increase comes at a time when postgraduate medical training remains an important component of strengthening specialist healthcare services. Officials said more PG seats can provide additional opportunities for medical graduates to pursue advanced training within Jammu and Kashmir, reducing the need to seek specialisation outside the Union Territory.
The introduction of new disciplines is also expected to widen the academic and clinical training options available at the two government institutions, they said.
However, officials noted that the expansion of postgraduate intake will also require adequate faculty, clinical exposure and training infrastructure to ensure that the additional seats translate into quality specialist education. (KNS)
