Police say 21 including 2 local guides rescued

Srinagar, Feb 01 (KNS): Two foreign tourists died after an avalanche struck Afarwat Peak in Gulmarg Ski resort in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Wednesday. 

Officials told Kashmir News Service (KNS) that avalanche struck phase two of Afarwat, following which a massive rescue operation was launched by the authorities.

During rescue operation bodies of two foreign tourists were recovered," they said. 

Meanwhile, police in a statement said today morning 3 teams comprising 21 foreign nationals and 2 local guides went to Afarwat Gulmarg for skiing. 

The statement reads at about 12.30 pm a massive avalanche hit Hapatkhud Kangdori where these skiing teams got trapped. 

"On receiving the information Baramulla police mobilized joint rescue teams along with the tourism department and they reached the site of the avalanche," it reads. 

It reads during the rescue ops, 19 foreign nationals and 2 local guides have been rescued. "Unfortunately, 2 foreign nationals lost their lives in the avalanche, and their dead bodies were also recovered," it added. (KNS)
