Srinagar, May 31 (KNS) : Peoples Conference State Secretary Organisation Sheikh Imran on Sundayday launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the delay in establishing the proposed National Law University (NLU) in Budgam, alleging that the government has failed to honour promises made to the people during the Assembly elections.
In a Statement issued ,Addressing the issue, Imran directly questioned the Chief Minister, saying, "Omar Abdullah, why aren't you releasing the funds to build the National Law University in Budgam? The promise was made before the elections, but even today there is no sign of implementation."
He alleged that the National Conference government has developed a pattern of making promises without delivering on them. "Breaking promises seems to be in your blood. Whether it was gas cylinders, electricity, jobs, or your election manifesto, nothing happened. Before the elections you were against the BJP, and after the elections you became the BJP's partner," he said.
Calling the proposed law university a necessity rather than a symbolic demand, Imran said, "Building a National Law University is not only essential for higher education but also a way to correct a regional imbalance. Why aren't you laying the foundation stone?"
He noted that Kashmir produces thousands of law graduates every year but lacks a premier institution capable of strengthening legal research, judicial training and policy discourse. "Our students prove their capabilities in National Law Universities of other states, private colleges and institutions like Symbiosis. The only thing lacking here is intent," he remarked.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Questioning the reasons behind the delay, Imran said, "This delay appears less administrative and more political." He added that Kashmir never opposed the establishment of major institutions in Jammu. "When IIT Jammu was sanctioned, there was no opposition from Kashmir. When AIIMS was announced for Jammu, Kashmir did not make it an issue. The hope was that development would be balanced and shared equally between both regions."
The Peoples Conference leader also criticised what he described as divisive politics. "The BJP knows nothing except division, division and more division. Reviving old regional and communal narratives is unfortunate and harmful to the interests of the people," he said.
Emphasising that the demand for the NLU transcends politics, Imran stated, "The National Law University must be built in Budgam. This is not merely a matter of education; it is a matter of trust."
Accusing the government of failing to uphold its commitments, he said, "You can support the BJP, but the vote was given to you by the people of Kashmir. Today that trust is being broken. You have crushed the trust of the people who believed in your promises."
Urging the government to act without further delay, Imran said the establishment of the National Law University would strengthen educational opportunities and contribute to the intellectual and professional growth of Jammu and Kashmir. "Real power lies in unity, justice and fulfilling promises. The people deserve action, not excuses," he added.(KNS)
