JAMMU, Sept 23 (KNS) : Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi, who is on a two-day visit to Jammu, on Wednesday demanded that the Jammu and Kashmir government make a clear, time-bound commitment in the Legislative Assembly on the regularisation of casual labourers, daily-rated workers and other temporary workers.

Referring to the latest figures placed before the Assembly, Inam said 1,00,501 casual and other daily-rated workers have had their particulars registered through Aadhaar-based biometric identification and skill profiling. The figure includes 69,696 casual labourers, 8,534 seasonal labourers and 8,836 daily-rated or work-charged employees, besides workers in other categories.

In a statement issued, Inam Un Nabi said the government must also explain why no regularisation under SRO-520 was carried out during 2024-25 and 2025-26, with the government citing judicial review of the policy.

“After so many years, these workers do not need another assurance that the matter is under examination. They need a clear timeline. The Government must tell the Assembly exactly when the regularisation process will begin, by when each phase will be completed and by what date the entire process will be completed,” Inam said.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

He said the Government Order constituting the committee on March 19, 2025 had given the panel six months to submit its report.

“If the committee was constituted to find a comprehensive way forward, the Government must now place its status and the next course of action before the Assembly. Administrative consultations cannot become a substitute for a policy decision,” Inam Un Nabi said.

Inam said the NC Government must put a specific start date, phase-wise deadlines and a final completion date on the Assembly record, along with the broad framework and eligibility criteria for implementation.

“A commitment without dates is only an assurance. The Government must give these workers a definite starting date and a definite completion date. Anything short of that is merely rhetoric,” he said.

He said the workers have already given years of service to government departments and cannot be left in indefinite uncertainty.

“Their particulars have been identified and documented. What they are waiting for now is a decision and a timeline. The Government must provide both,” Inam said.(KNS)
