Jammu, June 9 (KNS): Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today launched a mass distribution drive of aids and appliances for persons with disabilities (Divyangjan) in Jammu, underlining the government's commitment to inclusion and empowerment.
According to Kashmir News Service (KNS), the event was organized by the Directorate of Social Welfare, Jammu, under two centrally sponsored schemes — Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) and Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fitting of Aids and Appliances (ADIP).
“People with disabilities have special abilities. Their resilience, empathy, and problem-solving skills are admirable. The administration is fully committed to ensuring equal rights, access, and dignity for Divyangjan,” LG Sinha said at the event.
He further emphasized that building a compassionate society is a key priority, and directed officials to promote inclusive practices using modern technology.
During the event, Sinha disbursed Rs 6.14 crore in pension arrears to 12,660 beneficiaries under the Integrated Social Security Scheme (ISSS). These arrears had been delayed due to Aadhaar-related issues. He inaugurated a 50-bedded Half-Way Home at Lower Chowadi, Jammu, built at a cost of Rs 4.39 crore under the Deendayal Divyangjan Rehabilitation Scheme (DDRS). The facility will support the reintegration of persons with mental illness into society.
In Samba, the LG also dedicated the Parisha Child Care Institution for Girls, constructed at a cost of Rs 3.03 crore, commending the efforts to provide a safe environment for girls in need.
According to KNS, the Social Welfare Department, in collaboration with ALIMCO (Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India), conducted 112 assessment camps across Jammu Division. As many as 5,918 beneficiaries—including 2,939 under ADIP and 2,756 under RVY—will receive over 19,960 aids and appliances as part of the drive.
The event was attended by several public representatives, senior officials, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar, Director Social Welfare Jammu Rupesh Kumar, Divyangjan, NGO members, and civil society representatives.(KNS)
