Says Farooq Abdullah spreading baseless panic on UCC for petty politics

Srinagar, June 29 (KNS): BJP national general secretary on Thursday said that Uniform Civil Code is the essential basis for the unity and integrity of a country and this concept, based on the ideology of 'one country, one law', not only gives a sense of equality among the citizens, but it is also necessary in the present global era.

In a statement issued to Kashmir News Service (KNS), Chugh said that in the Uniform Civil Code, there is talk of making a uniform law for all regarding the acquisition and operation of property, marriage, divorce and adoption, etc., which is appropriate in every respect for the good of the nation and the citizens.

He said that rather, it is also the demand of the times and some people are looking at it through religious prism for political gains, which is not in the interest of the country at all.

“Uniform civil code is followed in many countries of the world. In many countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Egypt, Turkey, Indonesia, Sudan, America, Ireland, there is uniform law for all religions and there are no separate laws for any particular religion or community. It will help in promoting gender equality by eliminating discrimination against women. Especially in matters of marriage, divorce, succession and protection, its usefulness will be proved.”

Chugh said that it would simplify the legal system by replacing the existing system of personal laws with a set of rules, which would apply equally to all persons.

“This will give every Indian a sense of his nationality. This will make laws more accessible to all citizens and they will be able to understand them easily. It will ensure continuity in the application of law, as it will apply equally to all, then there will be no discrimination or discrepancy in the application of law. It will be helpful in providing equal rights and protection to all by eliminating discrimination on the basis of religion or personal laws.”

He said that this will facilitate modernisation and reform of the Indian legal system, as it will provide an opportunity to update and harmonize laws with contemporary conditions, values and principles.

“Today, when the whole world is moving forward in the digital age, the social trends and aspirations of the youth are also being influenced by the universal and global principles of equality, humanity and modernity. It will help in maximizing their potential in nation building. When it is followed by all citizens, tension and conflict between different groups will be reduced by providing a common form of rules.”

Chugh said that some people are unnecessarily criticising it by giving their sophistry, the people of the country are in favor of it, the discussion on it has been going on in India for decades and it has been demanded by social reform movements for a long time.

Launching a scathing attack on former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, he said that in no other country in the world there were different Civil codes for different communities.

He lambasted Abdullah for creating baseless panic to play cheap politics and instead of appreciating the Modi government for taking an initiative for one nation, one civil code, Farooq Abdullah with his irresponsible statements has been misgiving people and trying to create baseless fears.

He said that the entire nation is in a mood to take the novel step so Farooq Abdullah should realise the importance of reforms and support the Modi government initiative. (KNS)
