Rising drug abuse, illicit trafficking serve strong reminder to Govt, agencies, and society : Vivek Bali

Srinagar, Nov 28 (KNS): Vivek Bali State General Secretary JDU J&K on Tuesday said the figures about rising drug abuse among youth are alarming, indicating that 7 or 8 per cent of J&K’s population is now engaged in active substance abuse. He said such circumstances serve a strong reminder to the government, concerned agencies, and society at large that they must confront this issue head-on.

He said drug abuse has become the most potent cause of insecurity in our school going children and society. "Drugs in our society plays a major role in increasing the level of thugs’ activities among Kashmiri youth. This is playing out practically before our very eyes and we can no longer pretend that all is well. Drugs are destroying our youth like termite destroys the wood," he said.

He also said that unfortunately our neighboring country is pushing drugs to our area with an ill will and the only objective to destroy our youth. Though the law enforcing agencies catch big assignments of drugs day in and day  out, but the enemy is somehow able to penetrate a portion of drugs to our side.

He continued that drugs are destroying our youth like termite destroys the wood. He said that unfortunately our neighboring country is pushing drugs to our area with an ill will and the only objective to destroy our youth. Though the law enforcing agencies catch big assignments of drugs day in and day  out, but the enemy is somehow able to penetrate a portion of drugs to our side. This is the reason the graph of drug addicts  is increasing day by day. The government and non-government agencies including social media should step up their campaigns against Drugs abuses and its destructive tendencies.

He added that we have decided to come into the field and to launch a serious and sustained campaign to plug both issues. "Suicides are a concern and shouldn’t take place and similarly, drug abuse is a big issue and it is consuming our young generation. In wake of the surge in drug abuse in the valley, religious leaders, politicians and civil society have asked the government to take concrete measures to prevent youth from falling into drug abuse. The need for Jammu and Kashmir youth's to rise to the occasion of leadership and shun social vices is unavoidably important in national building," he held. (KNS)
