Srinagar, March 9 (KNS): An inaugural show organized in Gulmarg on the eve of the Khelo India Winter Games has sparked widespread outrage, with political and religious leaders condemning the event as highly inappropriate, especially during the holy month of Ramzan.
The Office of the Chief Minister reacted swiftly to the controversy, acknowledging the public anger and assuring immediate action. "The shock and anger are totally understandable. The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities, and that too during this holy month. My office has been in touch with the local authorities, and I’ve asked for a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours. Further action, as appropriate, will follow from this report," the statement read.
Prominent religious leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq strongly condemned the event, calling it "outrageous" and questioning how such a program could take place in a !Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channelarea known for its "Sufi and saint culture" and deep religious beliefs. "Those involved should be immediately held accountable. Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in Kashmir," he said.
People’s Conference chairman Sajad Lone also criticized the timing of the event, calling it "eminently avoidable." While emphasizing his belief in "dignified and mutually respectful coexistence," he noted that this was "not the best time to host such an event."
The event has drawn widespread backlash from civil society and social media users. Local resident Fayaz Ahmad remarked, "At a time when people are engaged in prayers and fasting, such events are a direct insult to our religious beliefs."
