Leh, Aug 7 (KNS): National Handloom Day was celebrated with a Tiranga rally and distribution of weaving equipment to local artisans at Lukung village in the Changthang region of Ladakh on Friday, with officials highlighting the need to preserve traditional handloom practices while improving their market potential.
The event, organised by the District Administration Changthang in collaboration with the Department of Handlooms and Handicrafts, Leh, was held at Lukung on the banks of Pangong Lake, over 14,000 feet above sea level.
Deputy Commissioner Changthang Nitish Rajora, who was the chief guest, said Ladakh's traditional handloom sector represents the region's rich cultural heritage and stressed the need to combine traditional skills with innovation to enhance the quality and marketability of locally made products.
He also appreciated the efforts of the Handlooms and Handicrafts Department and the sub-divisional administration for promoting the welfare of artisans and weavers in the remote region.
As part of the programme, Amber Charkhas and Fly Shuttle Looms were distributed among local weavers under various departmental initiatives aimed at strengthening the handloom sector and improving productivity.

The celebrations featured a Tiranga rally led by artisans and handloom weavers carrying a hand-knitted national flag prepared by local women weavers. Students, government officials and local residents also participated in the rally.
The event also marked the launch of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign in Changthang, with week-long celebrations beginning on August 7.
A cleanliness drive around Pangong Lake was also organised under the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, with officials, students, artisans and residents participating to promote cleanliness and environmental conservation.
National Handloom Day is observed annually on August 7 to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, which promoted the use of indigenous products during India's freedom struggle.(KNS).
