Handwara, Mar 13 (KNS): The residents of Audoora and Drugsoo areas of Mawer have urged the Deputy Commissioner Kupwara not to allow the setting up of stone crushers in the area.

The residents have apprehensions that the stone crushers will have a bad impact and that some influential people are trying to set up the stone crushers in the locality.

We are solely dependent on agriculture and horticulture land. Also, the Nallah Mawer, which is known for its trout fish, will be adversely affected,” they said

A local resident who wished not to be named told Kashmir News Service (KNS) that the majority of the population of the area falls under the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category.

“Setting up of the stone crushers at Drugsoo will have a negative impact on them. The process has been ongoing for the last two years. However, due to opposition from the locals, the process was stopped. Recently, we came to know that it is being processed again, which we will not allow at any cost,” the residents said, adding that they have already written to Deputy Commissioner Kupwara seeking her attention to the matter.

The proposed sandstone crusher is to be installed near Nallah Mawer and very close to agricultural and horticultural fields.

The residents said that it is also too close to our residential area and the Health Sub-Centre of the village and schools.

Additionally, clean drinking water is provided to dozens of villages of Langate and Handwara by the Jal Shakti Department Handwara from the same location.

If the said sand and stone crusher is installed in this area, it will significantly affect our lives, agriculture, horticulture, and the environment,” they said. (KNS)
