Baramulla, Feb 26 (KNS):Legal Metrology Unit Baramulla recovered a fine of Rs. 50000 from a plywood manufacturer and seller for sale of under gauge plywood boards.

Earlier, seizure memo was issued against the manufacturer and seller when an inspection team of Legal Metrology Unit Baramulla, under the supervision of Assistant Controller Baramulla, checked thickness of plywood boards offered for sale by a plywood dealer. The said plywood boards were sold as 12 mm thickness to consumers while the observed thickness was found to be less beyond maximum permissible error allowed under rules.

Pertinently, Bureau of India Standards (BIS) prescribes specifications for manufacture of plywood boards. According to BIS, maximum tolerance permissible in thickness is +/- 10% for plywood boards of declared or contracted thickness less than 6mm and +/- 5% for a declared or contracted plywood board thickness of 6mm or more. Further, Section 30 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 prohibits transactions involving short weighments and short measurements and protects purchaser from such malpractices. Plywood boards were subjected to measurement tests by the Department using Vernier Caliper and thickness was found to be lesser than the tolerance limits allowed under BIS specifications. Traders are advised to check their product for size and thickness before offering it for sale to consumers.(KNS)
