Srinagar, Aug 5 (KNS): Allegations of illegal extraction of sand and other minor minerals have surfaced from the Lowdara area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district, with residents claiming the activity has damaged a local nallah and adjoining agricultural land.

 

Locals alleged that unidentified persons have been extracting sand and other mineral material from the nallah and nearby farmland in Arin without authorisation. They claimed the activity has continued despite repeated complaints to the concerned authorities.

 

According to the residents, the alleged illegal mining has altered the course of the nallah and caused damage to adjoining agricultural fields.

 

"We have repeatedly informed the authorities, but no concrete action has been taken. The unauthorised extraction is damaging both the water body and fertile agricultural land," the residents alleged, urging the district administration to intervene and prevent further exploitation of natural resources.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

 

District Mineral Officer (DMO) Bandipora, Pintoo Madhosh, said the department has received reports about the alleged illegal mining and has deputed a team to verify the claims.

 

"There have been incessant rains over the past several days, which have washed down sand and other mineral deposits along the nallah. Some people may have taken advantage of the situation to collect these materials," he said.

 

The DMO said the department would not tolerate illegal extraction of minerals and warned that strict action would be taken against anyone found violating the law.

 

"We have taken cognisance of the reports and an inspection team has been deputed. If anyone is found involved in illegal mining, action will be taken in accordance with the law," he added.(KNS)
