Srinagar, Jun 11 (KNS): The Group of Concerned Citizens (GCC) Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday condemned the alleged murder of a woman in Srigufwara area of Anantnag district and called for a thorough and time-bound investigation into the incident.
In a statement, the group described the incident as a "gruesome" crime and said it had raised serious concerns about violence against women and the growing prevalence of crime in society.
Referring to reports that the woman was allegedly burnt alive, the GCC said the incident comes close on the heels of the recent rape-and-murder of a minor girl in Budgam district, which had triggered public concern across Kashmir.
The group questioned the progress of the investigation into the Budgam case and said there was a need for greater transparency and accountability in such cases.
The GCC said the issue extended beyond rising crime and reflected what it described as increasing social indifference towards incidents of violence, exploitation of women and children, domestic abuse, drug addiction and other social challenges.

"It is important to examine why such incidents no longer evoke the level of public concern and intervention they once did," the group said, calling for collective introspection by society.
The organisation urged authorities to constitute a professional investigation team to probe the Srigufwara incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice in accordance with law.
It also appealed to religious leaders, community elders and civil society groups to reflect on what it termed a collective failure to effectively address crime and violence, particularly against women and children.
The GCC expressed hope that the investigation would be conducted in a fair and professional manner and completed within a fixed timeframe.(KNS)
