Cyber Police intensifies social media monitoring to safeguard digital security

Srinagar, Dec 01 (KNS): In a proactive move to combat the rising threats in the digital realm, the Cyber Police has heightened its monitoring efforts across all social media platforms in the Union Territory.
 
The initiative aims to bolster digital security and protect citizens from potential cybercrimes, misinformation, and online threats.
 
Officials from the Cyber Police have revealed that the increased surveillance is part of a comprehensive strategy to stay ahead of cybercriminals and ensure the safety of the digital landscape in the Kashmir region.
 
“With the growing dependence on online platforms for communication, information dissemination, and social interactions, the need for robust cybersecurity measures has become more critical,” one of the top officials in the cyber police Kashmir told KNS.
Speaking about the initiative, he highlighted the importance of proactive measures in the face of evolving cyber threats.  “Our primary goal is to safeguard the digital well-being of the citizens of Kashmir.
 
The prevalence of cybercrimes and the rapid spread of misinformation on social media necessitate continuous monitoring to identify and neutralize potential threats before they escalate,” he said.
The Cyber Police Kashmir has deployed advanced monitoring tools and technologies to scan social media handles, track suspicious activities, and identify potential risks to the cybersecurity infrastructure.
 
“The monitoring efforts are not intended to infringe on individuals' privacy but rather to ensure a secure online environment for the community.
 
Furthermore, the Cyber Police has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or information that may pose a threat to digital security. The public is encouraged to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to create a safer online space for everyone,” the official said.
 
While emphasizing the importance of responsible online behavior, the Cyber Police Kashmir also emphasized the significance of digital literacy. The move by the Cyber Police Kashmir aligns with global efforts to strengthen cybersecurity and protect citizens from the increasing sophistication of cybercrimes.
 
“As technology continues to play a pivotal role in everyday life, initiatives like these become essential to maintaining a secure and resilient digital landscape,” the official added.
 
Sources told KNS that senior officials within the police department have instructed field officers to take decisive action against individuals found spreadingmisinformation through social media platforms.
 
A top police official highlighted the success in controlling rumor mongering in the valley, emphasizing that miscreants previously exploited social media to spread rumors and instigate people. The official, however, acknowledged that despite rigorous measures, some individuals persist in disseminating fake news through social media channels.

Another high-ranking official, stationed at the Director General Police office in Srinagar, confirmed ongoing police monitoring of all social networking sites. This official, who preferred not to be named, revealed clear orders to collect details of individuals spreading misinformation within the Union Territory.
 
The official underscored that the police are well aware of the happenings on social media platforms, emphasizing a clear message that legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to spread rumors or engage in illegal activities.
“The police have previously addressed cases of hooliganism and mischievous elements causing disturbances, with assurances that security agencies effectively handled such instances.To prevent the misuse of social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, the Kashmir Cyber Police has already registered several cases. These cases were based on continuous reports of social media misuse, violating government orders and causing disruptions in Jammu and Kashmir,” said the official.(KNS)
