Bandipora, July 11(KNS): Fear of wild bear attacks is growing across Bandipora district after two people were injured in separate incidents within the last five days, raising serious concerns among residents and farmers who now fear venturing into their fields.

 

The first incident took place in Chitteybandy, where Abdul Salaam Bhat, son of Gh. Ahmad Bhat, was attacked by a bear in morning while he was working in orchard. He was immediately shifted to District Hospital Bandipora and, after receiving initial treatment, was referred to Srinagar for specialized medical care due to the severity of his injuries.

 

In the latest incident on Saturday, Manzoor Ahmad Kumar was badly injured after being attacked by a wild bear in Gundpora Rampora. Locals rushed to his rescue and shifted him to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition is currently being monitored.

 

Residents of Gundpora Rampora said the same bear has been roaming around the area along with its cubs for several days, creating panic among villagers. With bear sightings becoming increasingly common, locals said they are now afraid to work in orchards and fields, especially during the early morning and evening hours. They urged the Wildlife Department to take immediate steps before another tragic incident occurs.

 

The Wildlife Department has already advised residents of vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and immediately report any movement of wild animals to the authorities.

 

Range Officer Wildlife Bandipora Tanveer Ahmad Lone, said the department was engaged in a search operation on Saturday but will install cages at vulnerable locations from tomorrow in an effort to capture the bear and prevent further attacks.

 

The recent spate of attacks has once again highlighted the growing human-wildlife conflict in Bandipora, with residents demanding swift and effective measures to ensure the safety of people living in affected villages. (KNS)
